Small backyard houses nestle people exiting homelessness in

robust, multi-faceted communities.

These homes are not simply placements. The focus is on:

  • careful matching between resident and host to create nurturing relationships

  • an overall positive experience for everyone in the neighborhood

This initiative uses concepts adapted from the Block Project and You Know Me Now. Please take a look at these sites and the video below to learn more.

We need all types of housing to solve homelessness. Master planned tiny home villages, permanent supportive housing (PSH) apartments, workforce housing based on median family income (MFI), federally subsidized vouchers (Section 8) all have a place. However many of these options are complex to fund and manage, frequently have long waitlists and unfortunately face push back from surrounding established residents.

Host-a-Home is a flexible housing approach driven by community choice. This type of housing fills a major gap in our city’s ability to provide options for people experiencing homelessness to reintegrate into society. Check out the Incremental Housing Toolkit developed in Chatanooga, TN using examples from across the United States.

The majority of people who are homeless prefer not to attract attention. Everyday unhoused community members strive to remain unseen out of fear and shame. They desperately try to meet basic needs while being displaced, excluded and churned through systems. There are wonderful human beings among us who can flourish if given the opportunity to

  • live in a stable home

  • in a diverse neighborhood

  • with caring friends from all walks of life
